Chapter 10

Madam Mim was waiting at the door as we arrived holding a tray of sweet teas. We each grabbed one and went inside.

Dot was wrapped in a scarlet chunky knitted jumper, lounging on one of the squishy sofas as we entered the cottage. She raised her head from her knitting. It looked like she had moved onto a hat and she gave a cheery wave as if nearly being killed by giant spiders was an everyday part of the job.

I nodded back and trooped upstairs to get washed and changed. Aloora lay on her bed, staring at the slanted ceiling. “Some day huh?”

“Tell me about it! There’s a reason I’m an academic!” She looked at me and softened her voice, “It was horrible wasn’t it?”

I hugged her tightly to try to reassure her. “Do you want a hot shower or something to eat?”

She gave me an appraising look, “I think you need to wash up first. I’m going to read a bit.” She took a long drink of her tea and reached for one of the books on dragons she had bought earlier. Her eyes sparkled as she settled into reading about her favourite topic.

I left her to it and went into our shared bathroom. I stared at the mirror. My hair was normally frizzy but now it was standing straight out from my scalp as if I’d been plugged into static electricity. My face was bright yellow down one side from the tarfangtula blood and the stain continued onto my neck and chest. I grabbed a fluffy folded flannel from a small pile on a wooden shelf and ran it under hot water before scrubbing at the blemish. The effect was to make the skin underneath the yellow stain red and blotchy. Great.

“It’s gonna take more than that flannel to get that off love,” a gravelly male voice sneered.

I gave a yelp of surprise and looked around the bathroom.

“You wanna try the body scrub in the cabinet. Over here,” I finally pinpointed the speaker as the gargoyle perched on the taps of the clawfoot bath.

“Wha?” I said articulately.

The gargoyle sighed, “The cupboard, over there.” He nodded his head at the only cabinet in the room and I opened it to find the entire range of Madam Mim’s beauty products staring back at me. I sifted through the bottles until I found an amber body scrub promising me “rejuvenation extraordinaire”. I held it up to the gargoyle who nodded.

Warily, I tipped some onto the wet flannel and scrubbed hard. When I looked back in the mirror, my face was its usual colour, and looked fresh and healthy. “Wow, thanks er...”

“Gary,” the gargoyle supplied. I was expecting a more exotic name but didn’t want to be rude.

“Thanks Gary.”

“Now it doesn’t work on clothes you know…” he said suggestively. I looked down at my top, also stained yellow. There was no way I was getting changed in front of a sentient tap. I hurriedly finished scrubbing until I was satisfied all
